Five Texas programs, five very different paths to the same job. Heading into the 2026 season, here's how the state's top signal-callers stack up.

Every August, the state of Texas produces one of the most competitive quarterback landscapes in the country — five major programs, five different conferences and schedules, and five quarterbacks with wildly different roads to their current job. This isn't a ranking based on recruiting stars or NFL Draft projections. It's built on what these players have actually done on the field, and what they're carrying into the 2026 season. Here's how they stack up.

Reed tops the list because no quarterback in the state combines production with pure improbability quite like he does. A fourth-string freshman thrust into an emergency bowl start in 2023, Reed is now one of only eight returning FBS quarterbacks nationally with 5,000-plus career passing yards and 1,000-plus rushing yards. He threw for 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2025 while adding 493 rushing yards and six more scores on the ground, helping drive an 11-game winning streak for Mike Elko's Aggies. He enters his likely final season in College Station in the middle of the Heisman conversation.

Manning carried the heaviest expectations of any quarterback in the country into 2025 — a new conference, a legendary family name, and Heisman buzz before he'd played a full season as a starter. He answered with 3,163 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 10 rushing touchdowns across 13 games, punctuating the year with a Citrus Bowl win over Michigan. The turnovers and sacks show room to grow, but a 10-3 record in his first full season as Texas's starter, in the SEC, is a real foundation heading into year two.

Jennings is the most productive pure passer on this list, and arguably the most overlooked. A Dallas native who had zero other FBS offers out of high school, he's thrown for nearly 7,700 career yards and led SMU to a College Football Playoff berth and 19 wins as a starter. He passed on the 2026 NFL Draft to return for a fifth season, betting on himself to finish what he started at the program that gave him his only shot.

Craig is the biggest wild card on this list, and the most statistically decorated. Across three seasons at Harvard, he threw for 6,074 yards and 52 touchdowns against only 12 interceptions, earning two-time All-Ivy League honors and Walter Payton Award finalist recognition. The jump from the Ivy League to a Big 12 title contender is the largest leap in competition level of any quarterback here — but TCU's staff specifically targeted him as their guy, not a fallback option.

Hammond rounds out the list on the strength of one of the more unusual comeback stories in the country. A four-star Texas recruit who tore his ACL in October 2025, watched his program sign a transfer to replace him, then got the job back in July 2026 after that transfer's departure — Hammond has completed 62.7% of his career passes for 1,151 yards and 16 total touchdowns in limited action. The sample size is the smallest on this list. The opportunity, defending a Big 12 championship, is not.

What connects all five names on this list isn't talent alone — it's the process each of them went through to get here. A fourth-string freshman thrown into an emergency start. A blue-chip recruit who lost his job to injury and earned it back. A hometown kid nobody else wanted. An Ivy League transfer trusting a Big 12 staff that specifically chose him.
