COLLEGE FOOTBALL CROSSES THE ATLANTIC
Opening day finally arrived, and it arrived in Dublin. TCU and North Carolina kicked off the college football season on foreign soil, and when it was over, the Tar Heels were the ones walking off Aviva Stadium with the win, 15-10, in a game decided by field position, penalties, and one very unusual play.
A FIRST QUARTER FULL OF FIREWORKS
Both offenses found the end zone early. North Carolina struck first, TCU answered to tie it up, and Jaylen McGill's touchdown gave the Tar Heels the lead back before the quarter was out. From there, neither offense would find the end zone again.
THE PLAY THAT FLIPPED THE MOMENTUM
Late in the second quarter, TCU was pinned deep in its own territory and never got out. A bad snap on a punt attempt went through the back of the end zone, and North Carolina had a safety and a 12-10 lead it would not let go of the rest of the way.
A SECOND HALF WON IN THE TRENCHES
North Carolina's defense took over from there. Melkart Abou Jaoude's strip-sack set up a Tar Heel field goal to make it 15-10, and when TCU answered with a fumble recovery of its own deep in UNC territory, the Tar Heel defense stood tall again, stuffing a 4th-and-1 at the goal line to keep the Horned Frogs off the board. TCU got one more look in the fourth quarter, but a 4th-and-2 pass fell incomplete in Tar Heel territory, and North Carolina ran out the final 4:05 from there.
BY THE NUMBERS
TCU never found its footing on offense, undone by 10 penalties for 95 yards that killed drives all afternoon. North Carolina didn't need style points — its defense forced four takeaways on the day and closed the door on two straight TCU red-zone trips in the second half, the difference in a game that never saw the end zone again after the first quarter.
FINAL WORD
Not the prettiest way to open Year 2 of the Belichick era, but North Carolina's defense carried it home. TCU heads back to Fort Worth still searching for answers on offense behind a new QB room, while the Tar Heels leave Dublin with a road win and a defense that looks like the identity of this team going forward. First college football game of the season on Irish soil delivered exactly the kind of dogfight opening weekend is supposed to bring.
