A 21.9 mph GPS clock, a 565-pound squat, and a résumé built in the Big Ten — Texas A&M's newest edge rusher arrives in College Station with the tools to replace an SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
Texas A&M didn't just add a body to the defensive line this offseason — it added one of the most explosive athletes in the country. Redshirt senior Anto Saka, a transfer from Northwestern, committed to the Aggies on January 7 after four seasons in the Big Ten, and he's stepping into a front seven that lost its headliner. Cashius Howell, the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year, is off to the NFL, and Mike Elko needs someone who can win one-on-ones off the edge immediately. Saka has the frame, the tape, and — as of this summer — the testing numbers to make that case.

Those numbers explain why national writers flagged Saka before he'd played a single snap in maroon. A former high school sprinter out of Loyola Blakefield in Towson, Maryland, he's always carried rare closing speed for a man his size — the kind that lets a defensive end chase down plays from the backside instead of just winning off the snap.
THE NORTHWESTERN RÉSUMÉ (2022–2025)
Saka's production built steadily across four years in Evanston. He notched at least one tackle in 25 of his 33 games, hit double-digit TFL production over his career, and put together a career-best four-tackle game against UCLA in 2025 — the same year he forced fumbles against both Purdue and Michigan. He was a two-time All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection and, off the field, an Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2024, evidence of a player who took the student half of student-athlete seriously.
He entered the transfer portal on January 4, 2026, and had a College Station visit locked in almost immediately. Ranked among the top 80 available transfer prospects nationally by 247Sports and viewed as a four-star addition, Saka picked the Aggies over a wide field of suitors — landing in a program that sent three defensive linemen to the first two rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft. The "D-Line U" pitch clearly worked.
Saka isn't being asked to be Cashius Howell overnight. He's being asked to be the next name on a defensive line that keeps sending players to Sundays — and the early numbers say he has the tools to get there.
What he's walking into is a program still stinging from how last season ended. Texas A&M opened 2025 at 11-0 with a Heisman-caliber quarterback and a clear path to the SEC Championship, then lost the final two games of the year — first to Texas in Austin, then to Miami at home in the College Football Playoff. Saka wasn't on the roster for any of it, but by his own account, he understood the moment fast: a program with something to prove, and a defensive front that needs to be better in December than it was the year before.
For a redshirt senior in his final year of eligibility, that urgency lines up well with his own. Saka isn't a developmental project — he's a four-year college veteran with nearly 800 snaps of experience, elite testing numbers, and one season left to show the SEC what the Big Ten already knew.
